About us

Kitwe Central Hospital- Community Eye Service was started as an initiative by Kitwe Central Hospital in its effort to put into practice the pronouncements of Vision2020, “the right to Sight”, to which the Zambian Government is a signatory. We realized that blindness was on the increase and at least 2000 people were getting blind every year. The estimates were that, by the year 2020, 75m people will be blind globally, out of which 60% will be in Africa and Asia. We at Kitwe Central Hospital also realized the negative effects of blindness to our community and the country as a whole and we whole heatedly, decided that we embark on activities that will reduce avoidable blindness on the Copperbelt and beyond.

This program initiated in the year 2002 by Dr. Asiwome Seneadza, after realising that the problem of blindness was on the increase in our communities and in Zambia as a whole. He also noticed that people in our communities were not accessing eye care services adequately due to a number of reasons some of which are ignorance about the existence of the service, costs of transport to travel to our centre, religious beliefs, just to mention but a few. With his team, they embarked on large scale community sensitization and free eye screening in the communities in order to ensure that people gain access to adequate eye health care.

Kitwe Central Hospital is the only governement hosptal in Kitwe. It was opened in 1958 and was directly controlled from Lusaka administratively until 1994 when the Kitwe Hospital Managemet Board was formed. It now falls under the Copperbelt Health Board based in Ndola.KCH has bed capacity of around 630 providing mostly acute but also elective medical and surgical services. Together with the hospitals in Ndola, it also acts as the tertiary referral institution in region.

It serves as one of the three teaching hospitals in the country where newly qualified doctors go to do there internship and where medical students and student clinical officers do their attachments.

There is also a Nursing School based in the hospital grounds and the student nurses do their clinical part of their clinical practice in the hospital.
